Sesame Crusted Pork Dumplings

Ingredients
  

For the Dumpling Filling:

  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 2 green onions finely chopped
  • 2 carrots peeled and minced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 ginger minced
  • 2 tbsps soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the Dumplings:

  • 30-40 round dumpling wrappers
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil for frying
  • Water for sealing the dumplings

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • 3 tbsps soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp chili oil optional
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 green onion finely sliced
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions
 

  • In a large bowl, combine the 1 pound ground pork, 2 green onions, 2 carrots, 2 cloves garlic, 1 ginger, 2 tbsps soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 tbsp hoisin sauce, 1 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 tsp sugar, and 1/2 tsp black pepper.

  • Mix thoroughly until all the ingredients are well combined. The mixture should be sticky and well seasoned.
  • Place a dumpling wrapper on a clean surface or in the palm of your hand. Add about 1 teaspoon of the pork filling to the center of the wrapper.

  • Dip your finger in water and run it along the edge of the wrapper to moisten it.

  • Press together the alternative corners of the wrapper to create a criss-cross shape, pressing the edges together to seal.
  • Lightly press one side of the dumpling into a plate of water, and then into a plate of 1/4 cup sesame seeds to coat it. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

  • Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and add 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.

  • Place the dumplings sesame-side down in the skillet, making sure they are not overcrowded.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the sesame seeds are golden brown and crispy.
  • Carefully pour about 1/4 cup of water into the skillet (enough to cover the bottom of the pan), then immediately cover with a lid to steam the dumplings.
  • Steam for 5-6 minutes or until the pork is fully cooked and the dumplings are tender.
  • Remove the lid and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to evaporate any remaining water and crisp up the bottoms of the dumplings.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the 3 tbsps soy sauce, 1 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 tsp chili oil, 1 tsp brown sugar, 1 green onion, and 1 tsp sesame seeds.

  • Arrange the sesame crusted pork dumplings on a serving platter. Serve hot with the dipping sauce on the side.
